Select Aquatics

    Select Aquatics breeds affordable,
    quality, specialty tropical fish for
    hobbyists and conservation
    research. Most are not often
    seen and many are endangered
or extinct in the wild. This site
is also a one stop place for
    fishkeeping information on
    how best to keep these
    fish.

If you are keeping an aquarium,
you have the opportunity to help
preserve species that are about to
go extinct in the wild. As well, due
    to increased export restrictions,
many species are at risk of
    disappearing from the hobby.
The fish offered here are hardy,
    generally not difficult to care
    for, and may depend on
    hobbyists such as yourself to
    maintain their availability.

Select Aquatics of Erie, CO.                 Since 2008

                       Select Aquatics maintains a
                       fairly consistent collection
                       of species/lines that are
                       bred here and posted as
available. If you wish to buy
anything on this page, or wish
to see a new species offered,
                       please contact Greg Sage at

               Do You Have Trouble
              Keeping Livebearers?

There is a very Common Disease in the
Hobby that causes many Livebearers to
become thin and perish. A small parasite
exists in our aquariums, and often comes
from where we obtain our Fish, and it
          primarily affects Guppies, Swords, Platies
          Mollies and Limias.

          Called "Livebearer Disease", this is
often why many have trouble keeping
livebearers. There is only one drug that
is effective at treating it -
          Levamisole hydrochloride.

Levamisole is also totally effective at
          eradicating camallanus worms and
          other minor pathogens.

This Drug is not Available from your
          Local Fish Store. Various sized
packets are offered below with a
measuring spoon. A 10 gram packet
will treat 500 gallons. See more info
HERE and in the right column below.

kept from someone you don't know
with water different than yours can
be scary. Some assurance that in

since many of these fish are rare
    or hard to obtain.

From your first email to inquire

The I. Furcidens Selective Breeding Project:

The selectively bred line of Ilyodon furcidens
continue to do well, with 15 tanks of breeding
groups and numerous fry growing out. Their
color and markings continue to establish
themselves with each new generation, and
some of the fish here are like nothing ever
        seen before in the hobby!

Before posting them here as available,
to ship groups of two young pair (plus one
individual extra) I shipped five boxes out over
the past two weeks. The fish were approximately
1 - 1.5 inches, in individual breather bags.
USPS was two days late with each of the boxes.
When the furcidens were shipped in groups of six
2-4 Month Old Unsexed in the past, with shipping
        delays, there were no losses.

With these recent groups of furcidens, a higher
oxygenation fish, each box experienced 1 loss,
and others in the box arrived stressed.

So I am continuing to add tanks and build out the
number of young, to offer them in groups of six 2-4
Month Old Unsexed.  I will post  their availability
here as soon as my numbers of 2-4 Month Old
Unsexed are ready to be shipped..

      Ameca splendens (Butterfly Goodeid) -

A number of orders of the splendens were
recently shipped, and they will be available
again when their numbers build back up.
I will post here when they are again ready
      to be shipped.

      Ilyodon furcidens (Trout Goodeid)-

     Because their color and markings
are not yet 100% consistent, I will come up with
a lower price than the current $40 a pair, and post
their availability here as soon as my numbers of
the 2-4 Month Old Unsexed are great enough to
     start shipping.

My goal is to produce them in large enough
numbers so that when they are available, they will
stay available for a while (similar to the Odessa
Barbs, Z. tequilas and the Tiger Limias today).

      Neocaridina Shrimp-

Due to extended recent USPS shipping
times out of Denver, the shrimp have been
      shipping inconsistently, and there have
      been losses.

So I am holding off on shipping the wild
      form Neocaridina shrimp until Shipping
      improves

      Pethia padamya "Odessa"

A new, automated breeding set up for the
selectively bred Odessa Barbs was built last fall,
so that producing top-quality, consistent fry can
be done regularly now, and groups of Six 2-4
Month Old Unsexed should be available for longer
longer periods of the year. In the fall, for a brief
window before they grow too large, I will also sell
groups of 2 young sexed pairs when available.

      Xenotoca doadrioi-

One of my favorite fish here, efforts
are being made to get their numbers
back up. They will be one of the 7
species I will focus on here, and like
the furcidens, hope to have them more
regularly available.  I am not able at
to predict when they will again be
      available at this time.

If you have any questions regarding
anything you see here, wish to place an
order, or just want an answer to a fish
      question, please email me at

generally respond to all of my emails

            WARNING to Goodeid Buyers!!

Goodeids require that they be maintained
and bred at temperatures below 76°- 77°.
Many Goodeid species, when exposed to
        higher temperatures, generally around 82°
or above, can be sterilized permanently,
sometimes when exposed for as little as
        just a couple days. .

I have been contacted by numerous
customers that have bought my Ilyodon
furcidens and other Goodeids from well
known sellers, who maintain them at
        inappropriate water parameters, such as
        high temperatures, or inappropriate pH
and Hardness. Be sure to check with your
seller before purchase that they are familiar
with keeping and breeding Goodeids, and
that they are keeping them in appropriate
        conditions!

The sellers listed above on this homepage
know Goodeids, and proper care and
knowing about the fish is their first priority,
and they will do their best to provide you with
        their healthiest, best quality stock.

Numerous efforts by myself to contact the
        sellers distributing these poorly maintained
fish, to discuss this isssue, has not led to a
        response.

The ideal water parameters for most
        Goodeids is a pH of roughly 7.2 - 8.0,
temperatures of 68°- 74°, but many species
can handle up to 76°- 77°. And hardness
        should be roughly 125 - 250 ppm. I have
heard stories of sellers maintaining these
at pH readings of up to 8.4, hardness of
        300 ppm and temperatures of 79° - 80°,
which guarantees that the stock you receive
may have difficulty breeding, or living a full
life span. When buying from another seller,
simply ask before you purchase, to make
sure they are being cared for properly, so
that they will do well for you!

          Greater Availability of Species!!

When Select Aquatics began, I posted
the letter to the right to all serious
hobbyists, to consider taking on some
        of these exceptionally rare species,
        maintaining them long-term, and
distributing them to others, so they do
not continue to disappear from the hobby.

A few have come forward, and I was
        recently very pleased to tour
        Ed's Aquatic Exotics, outside of
Pittsburgh, to find that Ed is working
very hard to keep and maintain a
number of species no longer carried
        by Select Aquatics. Known through
emails as we share the same concern
for optimum fish health, his lines are
        well established and robust.. Check
out his site from the link to the left
        and HERE - - EdsAquaticExotics.

Ed joins a number of other quality sellers at
the top of the right hand column, and each
I am very familiar with and recommend.
If you are breeding and shipping Livebearers,

A Quick Word about the Past, Present and Future of Select Aquatics!

I began breeding and selling my own lines of guppies to local pet shops from my bedroom
in eighth grade. I served as Chairman of the American Livebearer Association from
2000- 2004, and Select Aquatics was started in 2008, after selling fish at ALA conventions.

When chairman, predictions of many of these fish disappearing from the hobby came up
frequently, and species were starting to disappear. The goal of Select Aquatics was to obtain
many of the most highly desired fish, build them out, and offer them to the hobby so that they
did not disappear, as affordably as possible. My rates were set to meet overhead, and I have
never drawn an income from Select Aquatics - Profits were simply put back into better foods,
           improved equipment, better tanks, etc.

When I would get to a point where after many hundreds, or over a thousand were distributed
out to the hobby (such as with the Xiphophorus Montezuma and the Poecilia velifera) and
shipped, I then moved on, providing tank space for new species to build out and distribute.
30 species at a time were maintained and shipped from here for many years. Recently I
have cut back, so that I can provide desired species in greater numbers, more
consistently throughout the year. It is then up to the hobby for people to breed them, and
offer them for sale at sites such as www.Aquabid.com, so they do not disappear.

I have always enjoyed selective breeding, and have introduced six new lines to the hobby
over the past 30 years, and with the exception of the Ilyodon furcidens, which is not
rare or endangered in the wild or the hobby, I have never selectively bred any of the
Goodeids or the rarer fish here
, though it is commonly done in Europe, where many
beautiful varieties of the Characodon audax, for example, are available. Many of the
populations here have been breeding consistently, fully acclimated to this water and
are fairly homogenous genetically, breeding at their potential since 2002 - 2004.

After shipping over 2000 Longfin Green Dragons out to the hobby since 2010, I will no
longer be carrying them, but am building out species such as the Zoogoneticus tequila
that are exceptionally rare, and not widely available in the hobby. I plan to continue working
on the other species that were selectively developed, such as the Odessa barbs and the
Ilyodon furcidens, while continuing to focus on the pure lines of the wild livebearers that
           continue to do well here.

Over the past 15 years, Selectaquatics has now carried 46 different species, and the
care information on each of those species, from when they were being sold here, is
maintained at the link in the left-hand column above. If you maintain any of these fish,
please breed them and distribute them to others! If you do not, many of these species,
even some of those listed above, could be gone from the hobby within a few years, and
it is no longer possible to simply go to their home countries and collect them, as it once
           was.

Thank you for considering Select Aquatics, and I continue to respond to emails each
morning, discussing species and fish problems, and at this point, after over 75k emails,
I have probably written with most of you! I continue to speak to clubs each year, and if
I am ever in your area, I will look forward to meeting you!
