Select Aquatics

    Select Aquatics breeds affordable,
    quality, specialty tropical fish for
    hobbyists and conservation
    research. Most are not often
    seen and many are endangered
or extinct in the wild. This site
is also a one stop place for
    fishkeeping information on
    how best to keep these
    fish.

If you are keeping an aquarium,
you have the opportunity to help
preserve species that are about to
go extinct in the wild. As well, due
    to increased export restrictions,
many species are at risk of
    disappearing from the hobby.
The fish offered here are hardy,
    generally not difficult to care
    for, and may depend on
    hobbyists such as yourself to
    maintain their availability.

Select Aquatics of Erie, CO.                 Since 2008

                       Select Aquatics maintains a
                       fairly consistent collection
                       of species/lines that are
                       bred here and posted as
available. If you wish to buy
anything on this page, or wish
to see a new species offered,
                       please contact Greg Sage at

               Do You Have Trouble
              Keeping Livebearers?

There is a very Common Disease in the
Hobby that causes many Livebearers to
become thin and perish. A small parasite
exists in our aquariums, and often comes
from where we obtain our Fish, and it
        primarily affects Guppies, Swords, Platies
        Mollies and Limias.

        Called "Livebearer Disease", this is
often why many have trouble keeping
livebearers. There is only one drug that
is effective at treating it -
        Levamisole hydrochloride.

Levamisole is also totally effective at
        eradicating camallanus worms and
        other minor pathogens.

This Drug is not Available from your
        Local Fish Store. Various sized
packets are offered below with a
measuring spoon. A 10 gram packet
will treat 500 gallons. See more info
HERE and in the right column below.

since many of these fish are rare
    or hard to obtain.

From your first email to inquire

      Fishroom Improvements

      A Recent Equipment Problem caused
losses in 3 of the 8 Breeding Tanks of
furcidens, and I have been wrestling with
raising my doadrioi numbers. So I have
re-opened a number of tanks here to work
as water change reservoirs, to provide
only aged, seasoned water for changes,
and anticipate that should boost overall
health and help prevent losses from
      future related equipment issues.

      Ilyodon furcidens (Trout Goodeid)-

The furcidens are doing well, but I did
lose many older fry recently. Roughly 150
are growing out, to be sorted for color and
markings once they start sexing out.

I am considering posting a video on their
progress, as I have done for the Green
Dragons, over the next couple months to
show where they are. My goal with their
reproduction is to continue building them
out, and eventually have them available
      more regularly.

Keep checking here for updates, and
if I do put together a YouTube video to
be posted this fall on their progress, I will
post the link to the video here. Thank you
      for your patience!

      Ameca splendens (Butterfly Goodeid) -

The Ameca splendens have done well
this spring, and a limited number of groups
of Six 2-4 Month Old Unsexed are available
      at this time.

      Ataeniobious toweri (the Blue Tailed
      Goodeid)-

They continue to do well, and
limited groups of young pairs and groups
of six 2-4 Months Old Unsexed are
currently available. After sales over most
of this year, I have pulled down their photo
block from above, to start letting their
numbers recover, but limited orders can
      be shipped at this time.

      Zoogonotecus tequila-

These are doing very well, and a number
of young pairs are available at this time..

      Due to the reintroduction effort
      discussed in their recent Availability
      Video (Select Aquatics Available,
      Z. tequila 2024), the Z. tequila has
      had their population designation
changed from Extinct In The Wild
to Threatened. That is Very Good
      News!

      Pethia padamya "Odessa Barbs"-

Roughly 350 were sold from those
bred this spring, and a limited number
of just sexed out young pairs are being
      shipped.

A new batch to be bred is being
prepared, to hopefully have groups of
Six 2-4 Month Old Unsexed available
      once again next spring.

      Xenotoca doadrioi-

One of my favorite fish here, efforts
are being made to get their numbers
back up. They will be one of the 7
species I will focus on here, and like
the furcidens, hope to have them more
regularly available, as the Tequilas and
      Toweri are now.

Limia Islai (The Tiger Limia) -

The Tigers have begun to recover from
heavy sales last fall, and a number of new
young should be available in groups of 6
      unsexed by spring of 2025.

      The Alfaro cultratus (The Knife
      Livebearer)-

I have not sold these in a while, and have
started to build these back up, with groups
of new fry that should be ready to ship in
groups of two pair by early spring.

      Longfin Green Dragon, Private Waitlist
      Video

Showing all of the Green Dragons,
this video was sent to waitlist
      customers prior to their being
released later this fall. Open sale
of the Longfin Green Dragons will
be advertised here as soon as the
      Waitlist Fish are shipped.

I will keep their progress up to
date in this spot as they become
ready to be released as sexed
      pairs.

      The Green Dragon Waitlist Video
can only be seen from this link  HERE.

      Neocaridina Shrimp-

Always in good supply, groups of
20 ($25) can be shipped for roughly $60
shipping, but can also be shipped in
groups of 10 ($10) with most Fish orders,
taking the place of the extra. These have
been reverted to their wild form, are
incredibly hardy and excellent at cleaning
      algea and organic debris.

If you have any questions regarding
anything you see here, wish to place an
order, or just want an answer to a fish
      question, please email me at
      selectaquatics@gmail.com, and I
generally respond to all of my emails
      within 24 hours.

      Thank you!

             WARNING to Goodeid Buyers!!

Goodeids require that they be maintained and bred
at temperatures below 76°- 77°. Many Goodeid
species, when exposed to higher temperatures,
generally around 80° or above, can be sterilized
permanently when exposed to warmer temperatures,
sometime for as little as just a couple days. .

I have been contacted by numerous customers that
have bought my Ilyodon furcidens and other Goodeids
from certain well known sellers, who maintain them at
high temperatures, inappropriate pH, and extreme
Hardness. After a year, fish bought from them do not
breed as a result of their care before they were
purchased. Be sure to check with your seller that they
are familiar with keeping and breeding Goodeids, and
are keeping them in appropriate conditions!

The sellers listed above on this homepage know
Goodeids, where proper care and knowing about the
fish is their first priority, and they will do their best
to provide you with their healthiest, best quality stock.
Numerous efforts by myself to contact the sellers selling
these poorly maintained fish, to discuss this issue with
them has not led to a response.

The ideal water parameters for most Goodeids is a
     pH of roughly 7.2 - 7.8, temperatures of 60°- 74°,
but many species can handle up to 76°- 77°. And
hardness should be roughly 125 - 250 ppm. I have
heard stories of sellers maintaining these at pH
readings of up to 8.4, hardness of 300 ppm and
temperatures of 79° - 80°, which guarantees that
the stock you receive will have difficulty breeding
or living a full life span. When buying from another
seller, simply ask before you purchase to make
sure they are being cared for properly!

          Greater Availability of Species!!

When Select Aquatics began, I posted
the letter to the right to all serious
hobbyists, to consider taking on some
        of these exceptionally rare species,
        maintaining them long-term, and
distributing them to others, so they do
not continue to disappear from the hobby.

A few have come forward, and I was
        recently very pleased to tour
        Ed's Aquatic Exotics, outside of
Pittsburgh, to find that Ed is working
very hard to keep and maintain a
number of species no longer carried
        by Select Aquatics. Known through
emails as we share the same concern
for optimum fish health, his lines are
        well established and robust.. Check
out his site from the link to the left
        and HERE - - EdsAquaticExotics.

I have also added my friend Marshall
that has been supplying packing supplies
to Select Aquatics for the past 14 years,
       most importantly providing breather bags
and heat packs, and his site can be visited

HERE.

Please check out the other links above
right and I will be adding more contacts
       in coming weeks!

Mr. Sage provided me with the best experience I could've asked for. The wonderful fish he breeds are priced
very affordably, and are super high quality.

He always responded to our emails swiftly and was extremely helpful with any questions and concerns we had.
His packaging of the fish was phenomenal, and all (even the extras!) arrived across the country in excellent
              condition!

They are beautiful, healthy, and active. it was incredibly stress-free as I knew I could trust the process.
Despite a small delay due to the USPS, Greg quickly assured us that the fish would be fine.

Mr. Sage has a great reputation in the livebearer hobby, and I can say he has totally lived up to that
reputation for me and I'm looking forward to ordering from him again! I seriously can't recommend him
enough. Thank you for all you do for the hobby, Mr. Sage!

First, off thank you for the beautiful fish. Every time I receive a new species from you I am always surprised by
how much more beautiful they are in real life versus the picture. The Alfaro cultratus you sent for example are far more
stunning than any picture I have ever seen of them. That includes Google image searches.

                Hi Greg,
The Odessa barbs are here, in GREAT shape, and currently 'acclimatizing' in a 5 gallon bucket with my own
              graduated drip system.

Thank you very, VERY much for your attention and care and patience with me throughout this process. I've been
receiving fish via express mail for 30 years but your packing is a whole new universe from what I've ever experienced.

Thank you again for the 'bonus' fish which I counted as 8 but my wife insists is 9. She also could not believe the packing
or condition of the fish. Also, thank you for the anticipated forwarding of the rebate check for the excess shipping charge.
When everything stabilizes, I'll forward some pics. Again this has been the best fish purchasing experience I've ever had.
