Select Aquatics

    Select Aquatics breeds affordable,
    quality, specialty tropical fish for
    hobbyists and conservation
    research. Most are not often
    seen and many are endangered
or extinct in the wild. This site
is also a one stop place for
    fishkeeping information on
    how best to keep these
    fish.

If you are keeping an aquarium,
you have the opportunity to help
preserve species that are about to
go extinct in the wild. As well, due
    to increased export restrictions,
many species are at risk of
    disappearing from the hobby.
The fish offered here are hardy,
    generally not difficult to care
    for, and may depend on
    hobbyists such as yourself to
    maintain their availability.

Select Aquatics of Erie, CO.                 Since 2008

                     Select Aquatics maintains a
                     fairly consistent collection
                     of species/lines that are
                     bred here and posted as
available. If you wish to buy
anything on this page, or wish
to see a new species offered,

                      Do You Have Trouble
                     Keeping Livebearers?

There is a very Common Disease in the
Hobby that causes many Livebearers to
become thin and perish. A small parasite
exists in our aquariums, and often comes
from where we obtain our Fish, and it
                 primarily affects Guppies, Swords, Platies
                 Mollies and Limias.

                Called "Livebearer Disease", this is
often why many have trouble keeping
livebearers. There is only one drug that
is effective at treating it -
                Levamisole hydrochloride.

Levamisole is also totally effective at
                eradicating camallanus worms and
                other minor pathogens.

This Drug is not Available from your
                Local Fish Store. Various sized
packets are offered below with a
measuring spoon. A 10 gram packet
will treat 500 gallons. See more info
HERE and in the right column below.

    Ordering new species you've never
kept from someone you don't know
with water different than yours can
be scary. Some assurance that in
6 months the fish will still be doing
    well would be ideal, particularly
since many of these fish are rare
    or hard to obtain.

From your first email to inquire
    about ordering until the moment
they arrive, we will keep in close
touch to answer any questions you
may have so that you know exactly
what you are getting, and precisely
when they will be sent. Care

    also provided Here.

    Postage is never overcharged, and

The I. Furcidens and Odessa Breeding Projects:

I have been continuing to cut back on stocks
of some species to accommodate a buildup of
both the furcidens and the Odessa populations
      here.

Many new breeding groups of the furcidens, and
recent careful breeding of the Odessas for quality
is leading to the next level of intense markings and
color. The first Odessas from the most recent
selective efforts are at the 2-4 Months Old
Unsexed size. While nearly 20 tanks of breeding
groups and young fry grow out should have the
furcidens ready to sell in groups of two young
pairs as we head into the spring.

            The Non- Selectively Bred Fish

Besides the Odessas and the furcidens, my focus
will be on my colony bred livebearers that have
been here since 2002-2004, and are especially
genetically stable, robust, and prolific populations.

        The Zoogoneticus tequilas, Ameca splendens,
Limia islai "Tiger" and Xenotoca doadrioi
I will continue to build out and offer for sale.

                              -UPDATES-

         Ameca splendens (Butterfly Goodeid) -

Recent Breeding of the Ameca splendens are
building back out their numbers, and groups of six
2-4 Months Old Unsexed are in limited supply, and
should be available into the spring. The majority are
         currently 1-2 months old.

         Xenotoca doadrioi-

The doadrioi continue to build out slowly, and
there should be roughly 7 - 10 females ready to
spawn this coming spring. I will keep their
progress updated here and will post them
prominently when they are finally again
         available.

           New Select Aquatics Fishroom Video!

The first Fishroom Video since 2019 was just
posted, and with encouragement from various
customers, I worked with a big band ensemble,
performing a solo piece arranged and recorded
specifically for this video. You can let me know
what you think! I spent most of my life touring
and performing as a trumpet player, and it has

To order fish, simply email me your ZIP

will send you back a quote with the payment
information and the next available date to

           and Tuesdays, and with continued
           improvement to USPS Overnight Express,
I hope to start shipping again on
           Wednesdays.

With payment made at least 48 hours before
your shipping date, your fish will be shipped
to you on that date, and I will contact you
with the tracking information that afternoon
upon return from the Post Office.

Unfortunately, due to fees and costly
licensing, I am no longer able to ship fish
outside of the US. Hard goods are shipped
internationally, but you will need to email me

                                     WARNING to Goodeid Buyers!!
                                                                                Please Read!!

Goodeids require that they be maintained and bred at temperatures below 76°- 77°.
Many Goodeid species, when exposed to higher temperatures, generally around 80°
or above, can be sterilized permanently, sometimes when exposed for as little as
                          just a couple days. .

I answer questions each day from hobbyists looking for information on keeping these fish,
and continue to be contacted by hobbyists that have bought goodeids from a couple well
known internet sellers, who maintain them at inappropriate water parameters, such as high
temperatures, inappropriate pH, and outlier Hardness, resulting in fish that arrive alive, but
are not healthy, and/or will not breed as a result of their care. Be sure to ask your seller
before purchase if they are maintaing their fish appropriately!

Temoeratures can be no higher than 76- 78 degrees, pH should be roughly 7.2 - 8.0, with
100 - 250 ppm hardness. One prominent seller maintains his fish at 79 degrees, 8.4 hardness
and 300 ppm hardness! They may arrive alive, and may survive for you, but you may never see
                        reproduction.

Efforts by myself to contact that seller with customer concerns have gone unanswered. Choose
sellers that both know well and take pride in the fish they keep, sellers that produce healthy and
appropriately priced stock. If they claim to only have a few fish, and charge two or three times
what I charge for them here, and don't respond to emails when asking for information, then you
must seek out another source, for the benefit of the fish, so they will do well and breed for you.

Do not assume that because someone is selling these fish, or has posted a few youtube videos
that they know about the fish they are selling!

The sellers listed above on this homepage know Goodeids, their proper care, with many years
exprience keeping these fish. Knowing everything they can is their first priority, while always
priced appropriately, with much information and genuine concern that the fish you receive will
                      do well for you.

                     Thank you -

                                                               Canadian Customer's Shipping Prices:

            USPS has recently reconfigured
            International shipping.

            The USPS First Class International
cost to Canada has been increased.

Shipping the 10 or 20 gram Kits
was previously $17 shipping, it is now
            roughly $30.

A recent Fertilizer Order was denied
entry into Canada, and until this is resolved
I cannot ship my fertilizer to Canada at this time.

As well, a tariff fee of roughly $10- $12
may need to be paid to receive your
            package at your destination.

The cost of Domestic Orders of all hard
            goods does not change.

          Thank you!

A Quick Word about the Past, Present and Future of Select Aquatics!

I began breeding and selling my own lines of guppies to local pet shops from my bedroom
in eighth grade. I served as Chairman of the American Livebearer Association from
2000- 2004, and Select Aquatics was started in 2008, after selling fish at ALA conventions.

When chairman, predictions of many of these fish disappearing from the hobby came up
frequently, and species were starting to disappear. The goal of Select Aquatics was to obtain
many of the most highly desired fish, build them out, and offer them to the hobby so that they
were not lost, as affordably as possible. My rates were set to meet overhead, and I have
never drawn an income from Select Aquatics - Profits were simply put back into better foods,
           improved equipment, better tanks, etc.

When I would get to a point where after many hundreds, or over a thousand were distributed
out to the hobby (such as with the Xiphophorus Montezuma and the Poecilia velifera) and
shipped, I then moved on, providing tank space for new species to build out and distribute.
30 species at a time were maintained and shipped from here for many years. Recently I
have cut back, so that I can provide desired species in greater numbers, more
consistently throughout the year. It is then up to the hobby for people to breed them, and
offer them for sale at sites such as www.Aquabid.com, so they stay in the hobby.

I have always enjoyed selective breeding, and have introduced six new lines to the hobby
over the past 30 years, and with the exception of the Ilyodon furcidens, which is not
rare or endangered in the wild or the hobby, I have never selectively bred any of the
Goodeids or the rarer fish here
, though it is commonly done in Europe, where many
beautiful varieties of the Characodon audax, for example, are available. Many of the
populations here have been breeding consistently, fully acclimated to this water and
are fairly homogenous genetically, breeding at their potential since 2002 - 2004.

After shipping over 2000 Longfin Green Dragons out to the hobby since 2010, I will no
longer be carrying them, but am building out species such as the Zoogoneticus tequila
that are exceptionally rare, and not widely available in the hobby. I plan to continue working
on the other species that were selectively developed, such as the Odessa barbs and the
Ilyodon furcidens, while continuing to focus on the pure lines of the wild livebearers that
           continue to do well here.

Over the past 15 years, Selectaquatics has now carried 46 different species, and the
care information on each of those species, from when they were being sold here, is
maintained at the link in the left-hand column above. If you maintain any of these fish,
please breed them and distribute them to others! If you do not, many of these species,
even some of those listed above, could be gone from the hobby within a few years, and
it is no longer possible to simply go to their home countries and collect them, as it once
           was.

Thank you for considering Select Aquatics, and I continue to respond to emails each
morning, discussing species and fish problems, and at this point, after over 75k emails,
I have probably written with most of you! I continue to speak to clubs each year, and if
I am ever in your area, I will look forward to meeting you!
