Ordering new species you've never
kept from someone you don't know
with water different than yours can
be scary. Some assurance that in
6 months the fish will still be doing
well would be ideal, particularly
since many of these fish are rare
or hard to obtain.
From your first email to inquire
about ordering until the moment
they arrive, we will keep in close
touch to answer any questions you
may have so that you know exactly
what you are getting, and precisely
when they will be sent. Care
information for each species is
also provided Here.
Postage is never overcharged, and
extras are nearly always sent with
carefully done, professional
shipping. To help ensure they do
well for you, a Care Guide is
provided for each species from

Spring 2026
Updated

After a very busy spring shipping spring, I will be
taking a break to restructure
the fishroom toward
continuing to work on the
selective breeding of the
Odessa barbs and the
Ilyodon
furcidens, and will
post availability videos on
YouTube when they
are again ready to be shipped.
I will also continue to
maintain my populations
of the
Zoogoneticus tequila,
Limia islai and
Ameca splendens, while
continuing to work to build
out my line of the
Xenotoca
doadrioi.
I am also working on a fairly
extensive video on
the breeding of the
Odessas, going
over both the
old method, and the new automated
system that I
use today, where they can be bred
more consistently
and easily. I hope to have that video
posted within
the next couple of weeks, and a link
to the video
will be posted here when it is
available on YouTube.
I strongly encourage anyone keeping
this line of
Odessa Barbs to breed them, so they
do not
disappear! Thank you!

A Note on Selective Breeding, Newly
Developed Lines,
the I. furcidens and my
Green Dragon Plecos.
Currently using 25 tanks, the
furcidens have been developed out
into three separate lines, and over this
coming summer and fall I will
be setting up breeding groups of the best
of each line, to prepare
for their seasonal breeding this fall.
My goal is to produce a single line that
will be developed from the
best of the fish in each line, where they
could then be shipped in
groups of six 2-4 Months Old Unsexed, once
their ultimate
appearance is more consistent. But similar
to the Green Dragons,
until they reach their 11th generation,
their appearance will not be
fully set, and anyone breeding them that
does not sort them properly
will produce junk fish, as has happened to
the majority of the
Green
Dragons Plecos currently available out in the hobby.
If you are ever offered a fish claiming to
be a Green Dragon, and it
is not green, and does not have spectacular
finnage, it is not a
Green Dragon. Every Green Dragon
shipped from here, of just under
3000 shipped, were a true green that would
Shine Emerald Green
when a light was shown on it. If someone
did not breed them properly,
they can no longer be considered Green
Dragons. I have seen many
black and dark brown fish with poor, ragged
finnage, sold as Green
Dragons, and often when I will introduce
myself, the seller knows
nothing about the 15 yr. development of
that fish here at Select
Aquatics. Standard Color examples can be
seen in the Video-
"Select Aquatics Presents -Update and Green
Dragon Color."
I want to avoid this with the
furcidens, and already a couple Higher
Priced online sellers are advertising poor
quality fish as one of my
lines. If you are considering the purchase
of one of those fish,
simply email me with a photo, and I can
usually verify whether
a fish was developed here. Be careful
who you purchase from-
for some the Money is all that matters!

Latest Select Aquatics Fishroom Video!
The first Fishroom Video since 2019 was just
posted, and with encouragement from various
customers, I worked with a big band ensemble,
performing a solo piece arranged and recorded
specifically for this video. You can let me know
what you think! I spent most of my life touring
and performing as a trumpet player, and it has
been a pleasant experience to combine that
with Select Aquatics!

WARNING to Goodeid Buyers!!
Please Read!!
Goodeids require that they be maintained and bred at
temperatures below 76°- 77°.
Many Goodeid species, when exposed to higher temperatures,
generally around 80°
or above, can be sterilized permanently, sometimes when exposed
for as little as
just a couple days. .
I answer questions each day from hobbyists looking for
information on keeping these fish,
and continue to be contacted by hobbyists that have bought
goodeids from a couple well
known internet sellers, who maintain them at inappropriate water
parameters, such as high
temperatures, inappropriate pH, and outlier Hardness, resulting
in fish that arrive alive, but
are not healthy, and/or will not breed as a result of their
previous care. Be sure to ask your
seller before purchase if they are maintaing their fish appropriately!
Temoeratures can be no higher than 76- 78 degrees, pH should be
roughly 7.2 - 8.0, with
100 - 250 ppm hardness. One prominent seller maintains his fish
at 79 degrees, 8.4 hardness
and 300 ppm hardness! They may arrive alive, and may survive for
you, but you may never see
reproduction.
Efforts by myself to contact that seller with customer concerns
have gone unanswered. Choose
sellers that both know well and take pride in the fish they
keep, sellers that produce healthy and
appropriately priced stock. If they claim to only have a few
fish, and charge two or three times
what I charge for them here, and don't respond to emails when
asking for information, then you
must seek out another source, for the benefit of the fish, so
they will do well and breed for you.
Do not assume that because someone is selling these fish, or has
posted a few youtube videos
that they know about the fish they are selling!
The sellers listed above on this homepage know Goodeids, their
proper care, with many years
experience keeping these fish. Knowing everything they can is
their first priority, while always
priced appropriately, with much information and genuine concern
that the fish you receive will
do well for you.
Thank you -

A Quick
Word about the Past, Present and Future of Select Aquatics!
I began breeding and selling my own lines of
guppies to local pet shops from my bedroom
in eighth grade. I
served as Chairman of the American Livebearer Association from
2000- 2004, and
Select Aquatics was started in 2008, after selling fish at ALA
conventions.
When chairman, predictions of many of these fish
disappearing from the hobby came up
frequently, and
species were starting to disappear. The goal of Select Aquatics
was to obtain
many of the most
highly desired fish, build them out, and offer them to the hobby
so that they
were not lost, as
affordably as possible. My rates were set to meet overhead, and
I have
never drawn an
income from Select Aquatics - Profits were simply put back into
better foods,
improved equipment,
better tanks, etc.
When I would get to
a point where after many hundreds, or over a thousand were
distributed
out to the hobby
(such as with the Xiphophorus Montezuma and the Poecilia
velifera) and
shipped, I then
moved on, providing tank space for new species to build out and
distribute.
30 species at a
time were maintained and shipped from here for many years.
Recently I
have cut back, so
that I can provide desired species in greater numbers, more
consistently
throughout the year. It is then up to the hobby for people to
breed them, and
offer them for sale
at sites such as www.Aquabid.com, so they stay in the hobby.
I have always
enjoyed selective breeding, and have introduced six new lines to
the hobby
over the past 30
years, and with the exception of the
Ilyodon furcidens,
which is not
rare or endangered
in the wild or the hobby, I have never selectively bred
any of the
Goodeids or the
rarer fish here, though it is commonly done in
Europe, where many
beautiful varieties
of the Characodon audax, for example, are available. Many of the
populations here
have been breeding consistently, fully acclimated to this water
and
are fairly
homogenous genetically, breeding at their potential since 2002 -
2004.
After shipping over
2000 Longfin Green Dragons
out to the hobby since 2010, I will no
longer be carrying
them, but am building out species such as the
Zoogoneticus tequila
that are
exceptionally rare, and not widely available in the hobby. I
plan to continue working
on the other
species that were selectively developed, such as the
Odessa barbs and the
Ilyodon furcidens, while
continuing to focus on the pure lines of the wild livebearers
that
continue to do well
here.
Over the past 15
years, Selectaquatics has now carried 46 different species, and
the
care information
on each of those species, from when they were being sold here,
is
maintained at the
link in the left-hand column above. If you maintain any of these
fish,
please breed them
and distribute them to others! If you do not, many of these
species,
even some of those
listed above, could be gone from the hobby within a few years,
and
it is no longer
possible to simply go to their home countries and collect them,
as it once
was.
Thank you for
considering Select Aquatics, and I continue to respond to emails
each
morning, discussing
species and fish problems, and at this point, after over 75k
emails,
I have probably
written with most of you! I continue to speak to clubs each
year, and if
I am ever in your
area, I will look forward to meeting you!
